Even the Stones are Burning

from Warriors of the Rainbow by Dada Nabhaniilananda

/

about

This song was inspired by a film about the Eritrean resistance movement. Eritrea was a northern province of Ethiopia but historically it was an independent nation of highly cultured people.
For decades successive Ethiopian regimes tried to subjugate them, at first with American weapons and then armed by the Soviet Union. In their drought stricken land, the Eritreans continued their courageous struggle for survival against a ruthless enemy.
Since I wrote this song, after more than 30 years of war, they have won their independence.

lyrics

Even the stones are burning now,
You dare not wait to count the cost,
Long have your wooded slopes been bare,
How will you know if all is lost?

Memories of your village that burned,
I watched you die, caught your eye as you turned,
And tried to run but like the sun going down,
Your life’s blood ebbed away.

And you said:
"Never kneel down to your enemies my friend,
I held a post I could not hope to defend,
But victory will come to us in the end,
Oh how I long to see my family again.

Again and again the bombers come,
Fields and towns engulfed in flame,
I saw not a single soul alive,
How can the innocent survive?

We retreat, rebuild our cities underground,
But we'll return to claim our homes once again,
With all our hearts we will defend them to the grave,
From barbarians with weapons from a future age.

And though they bomb us till the fields turn to stone,
And though our children’s' children never return home,
And though they hunt us underground in the war zone,
We will never kneel down."

See the refugees long trails in the dust,
Forgotten wars in distant lands.

Even the stones are burning
Even the stones are burning
Even the stones, the stones are burning,
Even the stones are burning.

And they said:
"Never kneel down to your enemies my friend,
You hold a post that we will held you defend,
And victory will come to you in the end,
How you must long to see your family again.

Even the stones are burning
Even the stones are burning
Even the stones are burning
Even the stones are burning
